In January 2020, when the coronavirus began to surface in Vietnam, the country was proactive and took decisive actions to deal with the pandemic. Despite a close border with China, where the coronavirus originated, Vietnam has managed the coronavirus pandemic well.
Situation update for COVID-19 in Vietnam
Since Vietnam recorded the first few infected cases, Vietnam quickly took a number of bold measures to close schools and universities, institute travel bans on those who have visited the affected areas, along with fining those who spread fake news on their social media account in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
As of July 12, 2020, there have been 370 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Vietnam. At the moment, there are zero deaths and 350 patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Vietnam has gone 87 days without new COVID-19 infection cases in the community as of April 16, 2020.
At the same time, the Vietnam Military Medical University and tech firm Viet A Corporation have developed a test kit which enables the diagnosis of coronavirus infections within one hour. The test kit has been recognized by the Emergency Use Listing procedure (EUL) of the World Health Organization.
Vietnam has ramped up medical equipment production and made related donations to countries in need, including the United States, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Vietnam’s economy on the road to recovery
Like other countries hit by COVID-19, Vietnam’s economy has also suffered significantly over the course of the outbreak. However, the preparedness, progressive measures, and quick responses have been key to Vietnam has controlled the coronavirus pandemic well. The effective response had reassured businesses based in the country and Vietnam’s economy is going to be a bounce back after COVID-19.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has forecast Vietnam to be one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia despite the impact of COVID-19. In its Asian Development Outlook report 2020, it reiterated the country’s economy will bounce back to 6.8 percent in 2021, provided the pandemic is contained.
According to Visual Capitalist, Vietnam is ranked the first in the group of the countries “High mobility, High recovery”, by plotting two metrics for each country: the mobility rate and the COVID-19 recovery rate. In general, the higher the mobility rate, the more economic activity this signifies. In most cases, mobility rate also correlates with a higher rate of recovered people in the population.
